    7 1/4 rear end wheel studs

    Has anyone here ever put longer studs in a 7 1/4 rear end to support modern aluminum wheels? I need at least 2 inch long studs instead of the 1 19/32 OE length.

    What I've found so far is the OE are 1/2-20 with 1 19/32 under head length, .673 knurl diameter, .563 knurl length.

    I have only found arp 100-7705 as a possible.

    They are 1/2-20 .680 knurl diameter, .400 knurl length. They are 3 1/8 long so I may have to cut them down, but the part that bothers me is the .007 bigger knurl diameter and the .163 shorter knurl height.

    I can drill out if needed to get the bigger diameter to go in, but the much shorter knurl doesn't sound good. This is a brake drum rear end. Do our drums locate on the knurl, or do they locate on some part of the hub?

    F rear drums locate on the center register on the end of the axle. That raised circular thingy in the middle of the end.
    Most other MOPAR rears do also.
    Fronts are another story

    I doubt you'll need to drill for the additional .007" knurl dia. Might just need a hair more pressure when pressing them in is all.

    True, that isn't much. It would be better that way. No chance of drilling off center if you don't drill. I think I will order these and try to find a stud remover so I don't have to take everything apart to pull the axles out. Off to the parts stores...

    All the studs I've removed from the F rear axles came out pretty easily with a few taps of the hammer.
    But I'm not in FeO2 country, so....

    Even in the iron oxide producing states (see, I paid attention in high school science classes), the studs usually come out with not too much trouble. Axle flanges and studs are made of steel alloy that's pretty darn rust resistant.

    It's getting the new ones back in that's the challenge, especially if you're doing it on vehicle. You want to make sure the flange of the stud is seated completely.

    I had to replace a stud on the Volare this summer. The 7 1/4 axle used the same stud as the 8 1/4. Jim is right, a few blows with the ball peen hammer and it was out. I used a steel rim and impact gun to install the new stud. You must have a thick flange on those rims. I have modern rims with acorn style lugs and have more than enough thread engagement.

    I just want to verify that the rear wheel bolts comes out easy with a couple of blows from a small sledge hammer. Always nice to read that several persons have succeded with the the same action.
