    Alternative Carburetor

    Have any of you ever done any experimentation with other one barrel carbs on a 225 Six? Mine is a 1980 and the carb and choke is beginning to act up. I could rebuild it but before doing that I wondered if there is any reasonable replacement. I don't have to meet any emissions standards in Illinois so not an issue. My goal is improved drivability, not a lot of extra power (I am Old). Maybe a carb from an earlier model? Thoughts?

    Well four or five weeks and 260 views and no responses. I guess either nobody knows anything or if they do are not sharing. Ok, maybe Slant Six forum has some ideas.

    What carb is on there now? 1bl or 2bl? I would check the choke function before replacing. It may just need a choke pull off or a new choke thermostat. How is it acting up? For a exact replacement try Rock Auto.

    I didn't respond because I don't have any experience with it. As for alternative 1 bbl to the original, there is no aftermarket and any other cars with a 1 bbl would probably be more work than it's worth to adapt (say Ford to Chrysler for example).

    People are alive here after all. Thanks to both for responding. It is a 1 BBl not a super six which I understand was gone by 1980. I have observed the choke in operation from cold and it seems to open correctly. As I mentioned I removed the quick opening heater wire to slow down the speed of opening using now only manifold heat. I have thought about installing a manual choke but don't like the idea of running with the choke on most of the time. I am sure it has not been rebuilt and might just end up doing that next winter but wonder if any other options were around. I also removed the heat sink from under the carb that is there to help prevent vapor lock. Made no difference I could see. Thanks again.

    Well, I decided to just get a re manufactured carb from Rock Auto. Only about $75 more than the parts to do mine myself. Starts and runs much better at idle although it might be a bit before taking it on the road,

    Not a 1bbl, but I used a motorcraft 2100 2bbl on my slant 6 with a custom adapter once, it seemed to work really well, not much power but I did manage to get a consistent 30mpg back and forth to work (120km round trip). In a lightened up 1980 Volare coupe.

    Interesting choice. AS I mentioned I did go with a remaned stock 1 BBl and after fooling with it for a while it seems to run very well. Enough power to get out of it's own way and better gas mileage seems apparent.
