Driver side rear brake light and turn signal went out at the same time, i was wondering if the bulbs were in a series circuit

The brake and turn signals are the same bulb. If the bulb burns out, you lose the brake and signal on that side. The 1157 bulb is dual filament. One is for taillights, the other filament is brake/turn.

The exception would be if you had amber rear signals (like a '78 Aspen for example), then it's two separate circuits and bulbs.
